Haley Anderson: winner of 5 km in Kazan (RUS)

USA's Haley Anderson sprinted to victory in the women's 5km to capture the first gold medal of the 16th FINA World Championships. Anderson, the silver medallist in the 10km Olympic Marathon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was always in the lead pack of the race. At the halfway mark Anderson was in fifth position, 3.6 seconds behind Sharon Van Rouwendaal of Netherlands. The Dutch swimmer bravely led for nearly the entire race before Anderson sprinted to the head of the pack in the final 300 metres. Anderson and teammate Ashley Twitchell (USA) swam in the lead pack and always within striking distance. It's a popular strategy for a swimmer to let others lead the race, putting a heavy burden on the leader while conserving energy for the final sprint. Anderson is the third woman to win multiple gold medals in this event. Twitchell finished in 6th place. #FINAworlds #FINAkazan2015 #openwater

Chad Ho: winner of 5km Men in Kazan (RUS)

Chad Ho made sure that it was his hand that hit the touchpad first. Ho won the South Africa's first gold medal in open water swimming in today's 5km race, narrowly defeating Rob Mutffels of Germany. Muffells was 3.6 seconds behind the leaders at the halfway point in the race and was one of the leaders for the better part of the second half of race. The German swimmer admitted the line he took was a bit wide and found himself chasing the South African and Italy's Matteo Furlan in the final sprint to the finish. Ho had found a nearly perfect path to the finish line but the cameras positioned on the 27 metre tower above (for next week’s High Diving event) gave a spectacular view of the dogfight in the final 10 metres of the race. Ho, a bronze medallist in the 2009 FINA World Championships was being run down by the German swimmer. Muffells passed Furlan and began to reel in the South African swimmer.#FINAworlds #FINAkazan2015 #openwater

Russia’s Svetlana Romashina, performing her “Pretty Woman” technical solo program, was absolutely charming and fascinating so that you couldn’t take your eyes off. Christina Jones and Bill May: winners of Mixed Duet Technical in Kazan (RUS)

The dreams of male synchronised swimmers came true as mixed duet made its first appearance at the FINA World Championships in Kazan. Bill May and Christina Jones (USA) were the favourites of the first technical routine before the start. May is 36 years old. He is the most experienced and the most famous male synchronised swimmer in the world. He is actually the pioneer of this discipline. Back in 1998 Bill took part in his first international competition – the Goodwill Games, where him and his partner Kristina Lum competed with “ordinary” duets and lost only to Russia’s Maria Kiseleva and Olga Brusnikina. #FINAworlds #synchro

Yue Lin and Aisen Chen: winners of Men's 10m Synchro Platform in Kazan (RUS)

Very concentrated and presenting quite solid combinations, the Chinese pair was always in total control of the operations, leading from the very first dive and concluding their effort with a total of 495.72 points. They were never really challenged by their main opponents, Mexicans Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez, who took the silver in a distant 448.89. The last medal for the Central American nation in this event was obtained in 2001, when Eduardo Rueda and Fernando Platas, were also second in Fukuoka, Japan. #FINAworlds #diving

Interviews after China won by 9:8 against Hungary in Kazan (RUS)

Just twenty days ago these two sides clashed in a friendly where the Hungarians, playing at home, were superiors in the entire game and won 11-5. Then they led 5-1 after eight minutes. This time only a missed penalty prevented the Chinese from gaining a 5-1 lead. But they staged a really strong opening period, with two quick man-up goals, a converted penalty and another one from a 6 on 5 put them well ahead (1-4). In the second they had another man-up for a 1-5 lead but couldn’t create any chance and that cost them a lot. The Hungarians started to find their rhythm both in defence and in attack and with three connecting action goals they levelled the score with 2:40 to go in the second. The closing minute before the middle break was eventful, the Chinese made good use of a Hungarian error in the back but the Hungarians equalised again from a penalty, called just before the buzzer went off. #FINAworlds @waterpolo

Xie succeeded Li Shixin, world champion in 2011 and 2013 and the only man to have retained the title, but he had to work hard before eventually landing the gold by a handsome margin of over 36 points. Ocampo, 2013 world synchronised 3m bronze medallist, had led qualifiers in the preliminary round and held sway through the first three rounds of the six-dive final.

Maria Shurochkina: member of the winning team of Team Technical in Kazan (RUS)

Team Russia acknowledged their supremacy in synchro events, winning the team technical routine tonight. This was the third gold medal for the admitted leaders at the FINA World Championships in Kazan after victories in technical solo and duet and silver in mixed duet. Russians performed their high-speed “Kaleidoscope” programme brilliantly, earning 95,7457 points. China (94,4605) and Japan (92,4133) completed the podium. It was unusual not to see Spain among the medallist. But the Japanese bronze in tech duo and team routine is not for nothing. We should mention that team Japan got back their coach who left in 2004 to raise synchronized swimming in China. A good battle is expected in Rio-2016. #FINAworlds #synchro

Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito: silver medallists of women's 10m Synchro Platform

Olympic champion Chen Ruolin claimed her fifth successive world 10m synchro gold medal and continued China’s sweep of Kazan diving titles with the nation’s fifth in five events at the FINA World Championships. Chen and Liu Huixia, her partner at the last Worlds in Barcelona in 2013 and her fourth in all, led all the way and held off the consistent challenge of Canadians Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion to win by some 20 points. North Korea claimed their first medal in any of the aquatic disciplines in the 42-year history of the World Championships as Kim Un-hyang and Song Nam-hyang gained a well-earned bronze.

Tania Cagnotto finally won the world gold which had eluded her for so long when she scored a superb victory on the 1m springboard which ended China’s monopoly of the diving titles in Kazan. The 30-year-old Italian, who claimed her first FINA World Championship medal 10 years ago, took charge from the start and held off the Chinese challenge through the five rounds of the final to relegate former 1m world champions Shi Tingmao and He Zi to silver and bronze after China had bagged the first five titles of the meet.
